Remember Keith Moon. This plaque commemorates a legendary rock drummer. It marks a spot that once pulsed with the raw energy of rock and roll. This is the site of the former Marquee Club at 90 Wardour Street.

The Marquee Club was the spiritual home of rock music in London during the swinging 60s. Keith Moon and The Who rocked this very spot. Imagine the deafening roar of the crowd. Picture the frenetic drumming of Keith Moon.

This plaque wasn’t always here. English Heritage initially declined to honor Moon with a blue plaque. They felt it was too soon after his death. But fans rallied. Melissa and Gary Hurley spearheaded a movement. They dreamed of honoring Moon’s legacy.

The Heritage Foundation and Westminster City Council joined the cause. Permission was granted to erect a commemoration. On March 8, 2009, the plaque was unveiled. Keith Moon’s mother, Kit, and bandmate Roger Daltrey did the honors.

The inscription reads: “Keith Moon 1946-1978. Legendary rock drummer with The Who performed here at the site of the Marquee Club in the 1960s.” It’s a simple tribute. It speaks volumes about Moon’s impact.

David Graham of The Heritage Foundation said, “You don’t get characters like him anymore.” Moon was more than a drummer. He was a force of nature. His wild antics and innovative style defined an era.

The Marquee Club is no longer here. The building now houses a restaurant. But the plaque ensures that Keith Moon’s spirit lives on. It reminds us of the music. It also reminds us of the mayhem he brought to this corner of London.

While you’re here, consider visiting other nearby landmarks. Carnaby Street features a plaque to The Small Faces. It’s another tribute to the vibrant music scene of the 60s. Keith Moon’s story is one of talent. It is also one of excess and ultimately tragedy. He died at only 32. This plaque serves as a reminder of his brilliance. It also reminds us of his lost potential. Take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Keith Moon.
