Bent and weathered yet standing tall. These are the Chênes. They are a testament to time and nature’s enduring power. We are about to explore the story of these remarkable trees.

France reveres its ancient oaks. These Chênes stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history. Their gnarled branches and sturdy trunks whisper tales of bygone eras. They have seen kings rise and fall. They have felt the tremors of revolution.

Imagine these Chênes as saplings. They sprouted when William the Conqueror knelt nearby in 1035. While some say they are only 800 years old scientists debate their true age. Regardless these trees have been growing for a very long time.

One Chêne faced near destruction. During the French Revolution a mob sought to burn it. It was seen as a symbol of the old church. A clever local renamed it the “Temple of Reason.” This saved it from the flames.

Today these Chênes show their age. Poles support their weary limbs. Wooden shingles cover areas where bark has fallen away. Despite this they still inspire awe.

The French revere Oak trees and have used them to help rebuild the Notre-Dame-de-Paris. After a fire devastated its roof and spire 2400 oak trees were selected from public and private forests to reconstruct the edifice. The identified oaks had to be regular straight and very long.

The forest contributes in an unprecedented way. No less than 2400 oaks from public and private forests were carefully selected to bring the building back to life.

The identified oaks for the restoration of the cathedral were harvested 50% in national and communal forests and 50% in private forests. They had to meet very specific criteria. The trunks had to be regular very straight very long up to 15 meters and very thin especially for the medieval frame.

These Chênes stand near the Carrefour forestier de Lestrade in the Orléans Forest. One particular tree called “Chêne Paris” has a trunk circumference of 5.05 meters. It is measured at a height of 1.30 meters. Its height is 18 meters.

These Chênes are more than just trees. They are living monuments. They connect us to the past. They remind us of the enduring strength of nature. Take a moment to appreciate their silent grandeur. They are a true treasure of France.
