What comes to mind when you hear the name Lakeville? Does it conjure images of tranquil waters, maybe surrounded by lush greenery? You’re not wrong! Lakeville, as you might guess, gets its name from its lakes. It’s a charming town, nestled right here in Dakota County, Minnesota. And it has a history as rich and fascinating as the landscape itself. Before the arrival of European settlers, the land belonged to the Sioux people. It wasn’t until 1851, with the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, that the landscape started to change. Imagine a young Captain William B. Dodd, in 1853, charting a path between the military forts of St. Paul and Faribault. This route, a lifeline of sorts, cut through what would become Lakeville. One of the people who traveled this route, a mail carrier named J.J. Brackett, saw the potential of this place. He envisioned a town nestled by Prairie Lake, a body of water we know today as Lake Marion. In 1858, his vision became a reality. Lakeville Township was born. The town blossomed quickly. By 1858, it already had everything from general stores and hotels to blacksmith shops and even a saloon. But it was Colonel Marion Savage who put Lakeville on the map in 1910. He built the Antlers Amusement Park, a magnificent attraction that drew people from far and wide. The amusement park was connected to the wider world by a special railway line, the Dan Patch Railroad Line, named after Savage’s champion racing horse. Lakeville continued to grow, evolving into the bustling town we see today. Yet, it still retains much of its original charm. It’s a place where history whispers in the rustling leaves and the rippling waters, a testament to the pioneers who saw its potential.
