The Plaza de Pakistán was redesigned and inaugurated on July 27 2012. Ambassador Naela Chohan of Pakistan and Minister Diego Santilli of Buenos Aires led the ceremony. The event marked the 60th anniversary. It celebrated the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the inauguration, Minister Santilli praised Ambassador Chohan. He acknowledged her role in the park’s renovation. He noted that Buenos Aires reflects the world through its monuments and parks. Pakistan holds a special place within this global representation.
Ambassador Chohan expressed her gratitude to Chief of Government Mauricio Macri and Minister Santilli. She emphasized the importance of deepening the bonds of friendship. This would occur through mutually beneficial cooperation in trade and culture.
As a symbol of the two countries, a cedrus deodara was planted. Also, a ceiba tree was planted. These are the national trees of Pakistan and Argentina respectively. Chohan and Santilli planted them together. Officials from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires assisted.
The Plaza de Pakistán holds a special treasure. At its center, a black marble plaque stands. It features an engraving of a verse by Allama Iqbal. Iqbal was the national poet of Pakistan. The verse emphasizes the importance of love for humanity. It is inscribed in both Persian and Spanish.
The verse translates to “It is our love for humanity which makes us human. It is our humanity which transcends the universe.” This powerful message encapsulates the spirit of the Plaza de Pakistán. The message highlights the shared values between Argentina and Pakistan.

However, progress is not without its challenges. In recent times, the Plaza República Islámica de Pakistán has faced a threat. A new street was planned parallel to the Viaducto de la Línea Mitre. This street would reduce a significant portion of the Plaza de Pakistán. Neighbors voiced concerns about this project. They argued that it violated preservation norms for the city’s largest green space. They believed the street would provide direct vehicle access to a future shopping center. This shopping center was planned under the Viaducto Línea Mitre.
Despite these challenges, the Plaza de Pakistán remains a vital space. It continues to be a place for reflection and connection. It reminds us of the enduring friendship between Argentina and Pakistan. It symbolizes the universal values that unite us all.
