Gazing upon The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, can you sense the echoes of Victorian ambition? This magnificent structure, nestled in Upper Norwood, stands as a testament to the vision of John Loughborough Pearson, the architect who masterfully blended Gothic Revival elements into this red brick masterpiece. The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist first took root in the 1870s. London’s relentless expansion was swallowing the tranquil Surrey countryside. New homes, from grand residences for affluent businessmen to humble dwellings for workers, sprang up amidst ancient woodland. A temporary iron church served the burgeoning community. In 1876, this became the parish church under Rev. William Fairbairn La Trobe-Bateman. His wife’s untimely death from tuberculosis spurred a memorial fund, adding momentum to the fundraising for a permanent structure. Pearson, fresh from completing the grand St Augustine’s, Kilburn, was commissioned to design a church for 1,000 souls. The foundation stone was laid in 1878, but construction, hampered by funding constraints, didn’t commence until 1881. Six years later, in 1887, The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist was consecrated. The planned tower, a condition of a grant from the Church Commissioners, remains unbuilt to this day. Pearson’s distinctive touch is evident in the two turrets at the west end, features that Pevsner described as “typically Pearsonian.” The 160-foot long cruciform structure, with its tall clerestory above the nave, speaks to the architect’s grand vision. Inside The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, stock brick walls, arcades, and rib vaulting create a sense of awe. The magnificent stone rood screen, with its five Gothic arches and quartet of statues, dominates the chancel. The carved stone reredos adds to the grandeur. The church bears the scars of wartime bombing. Restoration work, undertaken by Caroe & Partners between 1946 and 1951, has preserved its beauty. Sadly, the original stained glass by Clayton & Bell was lost, but Ninian Comper’s magnificent rose window survives. The church has faced the challenge of subsidence, requiring reconstruction of the rood screen and threatening the south aisle. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and other generous donors, the structure is now secure, and work continues to restore the interior. The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist stands not just as a place of worship, but as a symbol of community resilience and architectural brilliance. As you leave, remember the stories etched within these walls, the echoes of a community’s faith and the unwavering vision of its creators.
