Rising proudly, Irmão Maior stands as the taller sibling of the iconic Two Brothers Mountain. This mountain is a majestic symbol of Rio de Janeiro. Irmão Maior reaches a height of 533 meters. It watches over the South Zone nestled between Leblon and São Conrado beaches.

Seen from Ipanema, Irmão Maior presents its most stunning profile. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas also provides a memorable view of the mountain.

Interestingly, Irmão Maior is bordered by two favelas. Vidigal and Rocinha spread along the mountain’s north, west, and south sides. They create a stark contrast to the natural beauty.

Access to Irmão Maior is free. There are no fees to experience this natural wonder. However, climbing alone is not advised. It is best to explore with an experienced guide.

The mountain offers several climbing routes. The Baden Powell Wall is a popular choice with a difficulty grade of 4ºIvsup C. Other routes include Free Route at 5ºVisup and Urubu Pass at 2ºII.

Climbing Irmão Maior is a year-round activity. Summer temperatures can soar to 40°C. It is best to avoid climbing on these scorching days.

In 1992, the area around Irmão Maior was designated Dois Irmãos Park. The park spans almost 40 hectares. It serves as an environmental preservation area.

Once deforested for grazing and sugarcane, the area has been reclaimed. Reforestation efforts have restored much of its natural value. The Dois Irmãos Park is now a haven for nature lovers.

The ecosystem around Irmão Maior is part of the Atlantic Forest. This forest is one of the richest in the world. Hikers can discover orchids, bromeliads, and various trees. Monkeys, squirrels, and birds also inhabit the area.

Dois Irmãos Park has viewpoints that offer panoramic views. You can see Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, the Botanical Garden, and Christ the Redeemer. The beaches of Leblon and Ipanema are also visible.

Trails make it easy to walk through the park. Playgrounds offer space for children to play. Steel sculptures by Oscar Niemeyer add an artistic touch. A memorial commemorates the victims of Air France Flight 447.

The trek to the top of Irmão Maior is moderately challenging. It rewards hikers with incredible views of the city.

So, as you stand here at Irmão Maior, remember its beauty. Appreciate its history and its natural wonders. Let the views inspire you as you continue your journey through Rio.
