Ever wondered about the secrets held within Riverbanks Center? Let me take you back to its origins. This sprawling complex wasn’t always a hub of shopping and entertainment. Before Riverbanks Center existed there was Asia’s largest textile mill. This massive factory occupied 23 hectares of land. The Riverbanks Development Corporation bought the site in 1995. Their vision transformed the old mill into the vibrant Riverbanks Center we see today. It opened in April 1999.

Riverbanks Center boasts a unique blend of history and modern amenities. It’s home to the Philippines’ biggest outdoor amphitheater. Remember the world’s largest pair of shoes? They once resided here in the Shoe Gallery a testament to Marikina’s shoemaking heritage. These gigantic shoes measured 5.29 meters long and 2.37 meters wide. They were crafted over 77 days. Sadly they didn’t make it into the Guinness World Records due to space limitations.

The center is more than just a shopping mall. It’s an integrated development. It houses office buildings. These are approved IT centers by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. This status grants tax incentives to export-oriented companies. One of the first call centers in Marikina was located here. This was the NASDAQ-listed ICT Group they employed 1400 people.

Riverbanks Center’s recreational areas are a huge draw. There are places for jogging biking boating and even camping. The Riverbanks Plaza and Amphitheater are central attractions. Imagine enjoying a meal at Dampa a seafood and grill station. Or spending an evening at Bonfire Grill a bar and restaurant with live music. The Philippine Science Centrum an interactive museum is also located within the complex.

The Riverbanks Center has also played host to major events. The annual Philippine National Fireworks Festival takes place here. Large concerts and other shows have filled its amphitheater. It can accommodate 20000 people. There is a wide flat stage. Or a movable mounted stage is available for these events.

In 2009 a flash flood devastated the area. Tropical Storm Ondoy caused torrential rains. The Marikina River swelled reaching a record 23 meters. The entire complex was submerged. But Riverbanks Center rebuilt demonstrating its resilience.

Today Riverbanks Center stands tall a testament to its history and transformation. It’s a beloved landmark in Marikina a place where the past and present blend harmoniously. Come explore its hidden stories its vibrant culture and the spirit of Marikina.
