Hidden amidst the gentle slopes of Hosszú-Erdő-hegy, Adyliget whispers tales of a bygone era. Adyliget was once a quiet retreat, nestled away from the bustling city. It was originally part of Nagykovácsi until 1950. Then it became a cherished part of Budapest’s District II. Adyliget started as a family housing development in the 1920s. It bore the name of István Tisza, a prominent Hungarian prime minister. After World War II, the name changed to honor the esteemed poet Endre Ady. Legend has it that Ady frequented the nearby Balázs Restaurant in Hűvösvölgy. He enjoyed lunches and the local wine. A bronze portrait sculpture of Ady, created by Kiss István, stands proudly in the heart of Adyliget since 1982. This serves as a permanent reminder of the poet’s connection to this tranquil neighborhood. Adyliget also boasts another, lesser-known sculpture. This whimsical piece, titled “Tisza,” is the work of Borbás Tibor. It features small houses, subtly referencing the neighborhood’s former name, Tisza István-liget. For decades, two other sculptures graced Adyliget: a male and a female nude. These figures were originally part of the Klebelsberg Kuno memorial. They were later returned to their original location when the memorial was rebuilt elsewhere. Adyliget also features the Ady-ligeti-medence. This is a unique geological formation south of the Remete Gorge. This basin, about 1 kilometer wide and 2 kilometers long, lies between Fekete-fej, Hosszú-Erdő-hegy, and the eastern slopes of Vörösvárcsolyás-hát. Before the Remete Gorge formed, the Ördög-árok stream flowed through this area towards Hűvösvölgy. Now, it slopes gently northwest. This creates a distinct microclimate within Adyliget. The area was once covered by oak trees. Many of these trees still thrive in the gardens and along the streets. This adds to the area’s peaceful charm. Adyliget offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. It is a peaceful escape within the vibrant city of Budapest.
