Before the Jurong industrial boom Pandan Reservoir was a prawn farm. Pandan Reservoir a vital part of Singapore’s history sits quietly today. It wasn’t always so peaceful. This vast expanse of water wasn’t always a reservoir. Once teeming with life it was a swampy estuary. Local kampongs thrived on the abundant prawns. This continued until the mid-1960s.

The transformation began in 1974. An earthen dyke was built. The swamps of the Sungei Pandan estuary were enclosed. Pandan Reservoir was born. It became Singapore’s largest service reservoir supplying non-potable water. The Jurong Industrial Estate was a major beneficiary.

The reservoir has served many purposes. It’s more than just a water source. It’s a recreational haven. The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club called it home for many years. Now canoeing kayaking rowing sailing and fishing are popular activities. The mangroves at Sungei Pandan’s mouth shelter diverse wildlife.

Pandan Reservoir took its name from the Pandan Estate. The area’s history is intertwined with the reservoir’s story. From prawn farms to industrial support to a recreational space. Pandan Reservoir has witnessed incredible change. It’s a testament to Singapore’s innovative approach to water management.

Today as you stand here you see more than water. You see history ingenuity and adaptation. You see a place that has evolved. Yet remains a vital part of Singapore’s landscape and its story.
