Could a street hold the echoes of a life so dedicated to its community? Here on Rue Arnold Géraux, the spirit of Arnold Géraux, a man deeply intertwined with L’Île-Saint-Denis, lingers. Rue Arnold Géraux isn’t just a street. It’s a testament to a man who shaped this town. Arnold Géraux, born in 1902, served as mayor of L’Île-Saint-Denis from 1947 until his death in 1965. His journey, from aide-comptable to mayor, reflects the very essence of this community. Géraux’s story began humbly. His father, a railway worker originally from Amiens, and his mother, a manual laborer, laid the foundation for his strong work ethic. Géraux himself started as a carter, then became an aide-comptable. His commitment to the working class led him to the Communist Party. His political career began in 1929 when he headed the Communist list for the municipal elections in L’Île-Saint-Denis. Even though he didn’t win, his dedication was clear. He ran for the legislative elections in 1932 and continued his involvement in local politics. By 1935, Géraux and three other communists earned seats on the town council. Rue Arnold Géraux stands as a tribute to his unwavering service. During World War II, Géraux’s commitment to his beliefs led to his arrest and detention. He was later deported to Algeria. Upon his return, he was appointed to the provisional municipal council in 1944. He rose to become first deputy mayor in 1945, and finally, mayor in 1947. Re-elected in 1953 and 1965, he served L’Île-Saint-Denis tirelessly until his passing. Rue Arnold Géraux reminds us of his lasting impact. As you walk along Rue Arnold Géraux, imagine the footsteps of the man himself, echoing his years of service and unwavering dedication to this community. He was more than just a mayor. He was a symbol of resilience, a champion of the working class, and a true embodiment of the spirit of L’Île-Saint-Denis.
