Does the wind whisper tales of resilience to you too? This is Røde Vejrmølle. It is a Dutch windmill in Albertslund near Glostrup. A mill has stood here since 1776. This was after Roskildevej was built.

Originally, a mill stood further north near Herstedøster. It had been there since the 1400s. It was last on Gamle Landevej. This was the original road between Copenhagen and Roskilde. The mill burned down during the Swedish wars in 1658. It remained a ruin for a long time. In 1721, the mill was rebuilt. Røde Vejrmølle Kro was built next to it. The new owner had received a royal privilege to run an inn. When the new Roskildevej was built, both the mill and inn moved further south. They were placed by the new main road between Copenhagen and Roskilde.

The old mill burned down in 1973. Fristrup Mølle near Tølløse was moved to Albertslund. Fristrup Mølle was chosen because it resembled the original mill. Today, it houses a storage company.

Røde Vejrmølle has lent its name to the Røde Vejrmølle Park. This is a row house development. It also named the Røde Vejrmølle Industripark business area. This area houses the headquarters for Coop Danmark. So, while the sails may no longer turn grain into flour, the spirit of Røde Vejrmølle lives on. It lives on in the names and places around us. It’s a reminder of how history shapes our present.
