What stories lie beneath the earth, whispering tales of resilience and sorrow? Here, at the Freedman’s Memorial Cemetery, we uncover the history of Dallas’s early African American community. Established in 1861, Freedman’s Cemetery served as a final resting place for over 5,000 freed slaves, making it one of the largest Freedman Cemeteries in the United States. Sadly, the cemetery was forgotten and neglected for decades after the construction of the North Central Expressway in the mid-1940s. The gravestones were removed, and the land was repurposed as a city park. It wasn’t until the summer of 1990, during park renovations, that the cemetery was rediscovered. Almost 800 marked graves were unearthed, along with an estimated 1,200 unmarked ones. This rediscovery spurred the creation of the Freedman’s Memorial, a powerful testament to the lives lost and the enduring spirit of the community. Today, Freedman’s Memorial Cemetery stands as a place of reflection, remembrance, and healing, reminding us of a painful chapter in Dallas’s past while honoring the legacy of those who found peace within its grounds.
