Have you ever heard of a street named after a man who touched the sky, only to tragically fall back to Earth? This is Rue Sivel, a quiet street in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. It’s named after Théodore Sivel, a fascinating figure who transitioned from navigating the vast oceans as a French navy officer to exploring the boundless skies as an aeronaut. Rue Sivel isn’t just a street; it’s a tribute to a man’s daring spirit and a reminder of the early days of ballooning. Sivel wasn’t just a dreamer; he was an innovator. He designed improvements for balloons, like the “guide-rope with floats” and the “cone-anchor.” He envisioned exploring the North Pole by balloon, a testament to his ambition. He made nearly 200 ascents, each one pushing the boundaries of what was possible. In 1874, with Joseph Crocé-Spinelli, Sivel soared to 7,400 meters in the Étoile polaire, testing the use of oxygen and making astronomical observations. He even captained the Zenith balloon on a record-breaking 22-hour flight from Paris to Arcachon. However, Rue Sivel also whispers a tale of tragedy. In 1875, Sivel, Crocé-Spinelli, and Gaston Tissandier embarked on another ascent in the Zenith, aiming to break the altitude record. Sadly, Sivel and Crocé-Spinelli perished from asphyxiation, while Tissandier miraculously survived. Their funeral in Paris was a grand affair, attended by over twenty thousand people, a testament to the public’s fascination with these pioneers of flight. The street’s very existence immortalizes Sivel’s contributions to aeronautics, despite the tragic end to his journey. Rue Sivel stands as a quiet testament to the dreams and daring of a man who reached for the stars.
