He chose this spot to build a mill. Initially, it made gunpowder for the Texas State Military Board. This was for use during the Civil War. After the war, the mill became a grist mill. It ground corn. It also served as a communal meeting place. Families would travel by wagon. They would transport their corn. The trip could take over a week.
The origin of Volente’s name is shrouded in local lore. Some say Lucy Anderson found the name in a book. Others believe it comes from a Native American phrase meaning “God willing.” The literal translation is “to be willing.” Regardless, the name stuck.
However, Volente wasn’t always Volente. In the 1930s and 1940s, a local Realtor and his wife renamed it Dodd City. This change coincided with the construction of Mansfield Dam. The dam led to the flooding of Lake Travis. Many families had to move to higher ground. Monty Dodd was a prominent figure during this relocation.
As Lake Travis formed, families resettled along the new shorelines. One such place was Gun Hollow. Dodd’s influence grew with the rising lake waters. But the name Dodd City didn’t last. Rival restaurant owners pushed to restore the original name. People learned of a town north of Dallas also named Dodd City.
In the 1950s, the community officially reverted to Volente. Today, Volente has a church. It has a fire hall. It has a community center. You can visit the Anderson Mill Museum.
