A shimmering bronze disc catches the sunlight. It’s the Planetenweg Venus in Bremerhaven. This isn’t just any planet model. This is a gateway to understanding our solar system’s immense scale.
The Planetenweg Bremerhaven is more than just a path. It’s a journey through space. A journey that begins right here with the Sun a monumental bronze sphere. Imagine the sheer size of the real Sun. This model at a scale of 1:1 billion gives you a glimpse.
From the Sun we follow the path southward. The inner planets Mercury Venus Earth and Mars are close. They are marked along the Weserdeich promenade. A unique feature is the clear view of the Sun from each of these inner planets. It’s like having a front-row seat to a celestial show.
Our journey continues past the Planetarium. It’s run by the Alfred Wegener Institute and the Bremerhaven school board. The Planetarium itself isn’t part of the Planetenweg but adds another layer to this cosmic experience.
Further along near the Fischereischaufenster and Phänomenta we find Uranus. Nearby is the Bremerhavener Sternfreunde association. They are passionate about astronomy. Their interest in the project is remarkable.
Finally we reach Neptune. It’s located near the Bremerhaven airport. Can you imagine the distance from the Sun to Neptune? This scale model helps to appreciate the vast emptiness of space.
The path ends at Pluto. This former planet now a dwarf planet marks the end of our journey. Pluto is located at the end of Am Lunedeich street. It is about 5900 meters away from our starting point.
The Planetenweg Venus is a project of immense scale and vision. It was created by individuals who combined their passion for astronomy. The entire Planetenweg Bremerhaven was planned to coincide with the International Year of Astronomy in 2009.
Each planet is a work of art. Most are beautifully crafted bronze plaques. Only the Sun is a three dimensional sphere. This detail emphasizes its importance. Local sponsors generously financed the project. Their contribution is essential.
