Now, let’s journey back to the origins of Landmark Baptist Church. It began as the First Missionary Baptist Church. Bill Edmonston founded it in November 1958. Early meetings took place in the local VFW. God blessed the church. In July 1959, they moved into their own building. There were 50 charter members.
Pastor Edmonston moved on. Jimmy Walker and Paul Crouch then served as pastors. In 1967, Pastor Edmonston returned. A new auditorium was completed the following year. In the fall of 1970, he took a church in Tallahassee.
On December 23, 1970, Mickey Carter was voted in as pastor. His first Sunday was January 3, 1971. Sunday school attendance was 37. The church made a decision to start a Christian day school in the late summer of 1972. A few weeks later, the school opened. Classrooms were adjacent to the east side of the main auditorium. There were roughly 30 students from kindergarten through 3rd grade.
Attendance grew almost weekly. A new auditorium was built in 1974. It was on property adjacent to the east side of the old auditorium and day school. Attendance on the first Sunday, August 11, was 706.
At the Watch Night service that year, plans for a summer youth camp were presented. A member donated ten acres for this. Pastor Carter and members began clearing the land on New Year’s Day. The first camp session at “Camp Glory” was in August 1975. The church later purchased 40 adjoining acres. A member paid the note before the first payment was due. The camp now occupies 50 acres.
The Christian day school program extended through the 12th grade. This started with the 1975-1976 school year. Two miracles occurred in the summer of 1976. Unavailable land adjacent to the east side of the auditorium became available. $100,000 was raised on one Sunday to make the down payment. This money was used to build the gymnasium and classrooms.
In 1979, First Missionary Baptist Church changed its name. It became Landmark Baptist Church. This change was based on Proverbs 22:28. “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”
That same year, Pastor Carter wanted to establish a college. It would be dedicated to the same principles as the church. The college was originally housed on the property east of the main auditorium.
1979 also marked the start of an outreach program. This was for senior citizens. Originally called Super Sixties, the Senior Patriots meet each Saturday. They meet from November through March. They enjoy preaching, singing, fellowship, and lunch. There are also day trips. This ministry encourages physical and spiritual activity.
