What colossal tools built this city? Here at the SODO light rail station, we stand before Michael Davis’s “Made in USA,” a striking sculpture that celebrates Seattle’s industrial roots. Installed in 2005, “Made in USA” was the first public art piece on the Central Link light rail line. The sculpture dominates the plaza with a 24-foot-high steel archway. This isn’t just any archway. It’s formed from oversized tools of the trade: a try square, a spirit level, and a carpenter’s pencil, all rendered in massive steel. Imagine the giant hand that might wield these tools. The “Made in USA” sculpture speaks to SoDo’s history, a neighborhood forged in industry and craftsmanship. The plaza itself is a work of art. Benches shaped like I-beams and a cog offer a place to rest. Look closely at the granite tops. You’ll find cast bronze replicas of workbench tools soldered onto the surface, another nod to the area’s hardworking past. “Made in USA” isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a tribute to the builders, the makers, the ones who shaped Seattle with their hands and their tools.
