This refers to a legendary Tahitian god said to have lived in a cave there. His eight bright eyes are said to be the inspiration for the name. But the modern bright eye at Makapu’u is the lighthouse. The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse wasn’t always automated. For many years lighthouse keepers and their families lived on site. They manually operated the light. One of these keepers Ron Cianfarani the last keeper before automation. He has fond memories of his time there. He described it as an unbelievable three years with stunning views. He even recalls a time when the famous actor Jack Lord sent his wife a bouquet. This was after the filming of Hawaii Five-O briefly blocked the road to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse itself houses an incredible feat of engineering a giant Fresnel lens. This lens is the largest in the United States. It’s so large that its pieces had to be hauled up the cliff face from a ship before the road even existed. Today this lens magnifies a single 1000-watt bulb illuminating the waters far and wide. It’s a testament to ingenuity and perseverance.
