Wild olive trees once thrived here. La Oliva owes its name to them. Today we explore La Oliva a town steeped in history and charm. It once served as Fuerteventura’s capital.

Imagine the 18th and 19th centuries. La Oliva was ruled by powerful military Colonels. They held immense sway over the island’s military judicial political and economic affairs. These Colonels resided in the Casa de los Coroneles. It is a grand building that reflects their authority.

The Casa de los Coroneles is a must-see. The Cabrera Bethencourt family built it in the late 17th century. It became the Colonels’ residence in the 18th century. They moved here from Betancuria. Note the decorative balconies. Admire the intricate door carvings. This house is the finest example of civil architecture in Fuerteventura.

La Oliva’s story extends beyond military might. It was once the island’s breadbasket. The area produced abundant cereals and grains. You can still see remnants of this agricultural past. Look for molinos windmills and cillas grain stores scattered around the countryside.

Let’s talk about the Church of the Candelaria. The parish was founded in 1708. The church is one of the island’s largest. Its black basalt bell tower stands out against the white walls. Locals once used this tower as refuge during pirate raids.

Not far from the church stands the House of the Cilla. It was once a warehouse for tithes. These tithes were a tenth of the year’s harvest paid to the Church. Today the Cilla houses a Grain Museum. It showcases the area’s agricultural history. Step inside to explore traditional farming methods.

Another interesting site is the Hermitage of the Hidden Village. It is also known as Ermita de Puerto Rico. Some say it was the first hermitage in the area. Its white stonework is decorated with plant motifs. A carved cross graces the door’s lintel.

The Traditions Market also has a story. In 1840 Sebastiana Cabrera gave this house to her son. His name was Pedro Manrique de Lara. She wanted him to live independently. Today it hosts local artisans. They sell handicrafts and local products. Visit on Tuesdays and Fridays.

La Oliva’s time as capital was short-lived. It took over from Betancuria in 1836. However by 1860 Puerto de Cabras now Puerto del Rosario became the new capital.

Mismanagement of water over-cultivation and over-grazing led to desertification. Despite this La Oliva retains its charm. Its historical buildings tell tales of power agriculture and faith.

Take a walk around La Oliva. Imagine the Colonels their influence and the island’s agricultural past. See the architecture. Feel the history. La Oliva offers a unique glimpse into Fuerteventura’s heritage.
