In the heart of Ivry-sur-Seine, a small, unassuming street winds its way through a quiet neighborhood. It’s just another ordinary Parisian street, right? Wrong! It’s Escalier Nathalie Lemel, named after a woman who left a powerful mark on French history.

Nathalie Lemel was a militant anarchist and feminist. Born in Brest in 1827, she was a strong advocate for social change. She worked as a bookbinder and later opened a bookshop with her husband. But that’s not all. She was also a dedicated member of the First International.

This organization promoted workers’ rights and equality. Nathalie Lemel became a leading voice for women’s rights. She spoke at women’s clubs, and was one of the founders of the Women’s Union for the Defense of Paris. The Commune was a turbulent period in France’s history, and Nathalie Lemel was a key figure in the fight for social justice. She was on the barricades during the Commune, defending her beliefs. She was later exiled for her actions. She spent years in New Caledonia, surviving hardship and influencing change.

When she returned to Paris, she remained active in women’s rights movements. She fought tirelessly for equality throughout her life. Nathalie Lemel’s legacy lives on in Ivry-sur-Seine. The small street is a testament to her life and her commitment to creating a more just world. Although you may not see her on the barricades today, her story lives on in the name of this street.
