What secrets does a riverside town hold? Our story unfolds at the Staines and District Synagogue. This unassuming building holds a piece of wartime London, transplanted to the quiet banks of the Thames. The Staines and District Synagogue wasn’t always here on Westbrook Road. Its journey began amidst the chaos of World War II. In 1943, Londoners fleeing the Blitz sought refuge in Staines. They formed the Staines, Egham and District United Synagogue Membership Group. Imagine families, carrying their traditions and hopes, finding solace in this small town. Their community grew, officially becoming the Staines and District Synagogue in 1946. The synagogue’s first home was on the High Street. It later moved to Tothill Street in 1952, before finally settling at its current location on Westbrook Road around 1976. The Staines and District Synagogue became a vital hub. It offered a place of worship and a connection to a familiar past in unfamiliar surroundings. It has seen a succession of spiritual leaders. Reverend Lewis Rosenberg guided the community for decades. Rabbi Yehudah Black and Rabbi Nir Menashe also served the congregation. Today, Staines and District Synagogue thrives as an affiliated Orthodox synagogue of the United Synagogue. It even incorporated the Slough & Windsor Affiliated Synagogue after its closure around 1986. The Staines and District Synagogue stands as a testament to resilience and community. It is a quiet reminder of how faith and tradition can flourish, even in the face of adversity.
