$4200. That’s how much the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League initially invested in the Chinese Lutheran Church. This modest sum launched a remarkable journey. Right here before us stands a testament to faith dedication and community. This is the Chinese Lutheran Church in San Francisco.

In 1963 Rev Wilbert V Holt a former missionary in China and Hong Kong was commissioned to minister to the Chinese community in San Francisco. He started with a storefront on Jackson Street. The first service a blend of Chinese and English languages was held in March 1964. This small beginning grew into something extraordinary.

The congregation thrived. Soon the small storefront proved too small. They moved to a larger building on Washington Street in 1969. The Lutheran Women’s Mission League generously donated $100000 for renovations. New immigrants flocked to its bilingual services and Bible fellowships. A sense of belonging blossomed. A family grew.

Growth continued. The church expanded to the Sunset District in 1987 establishing an after school tutoring program called Help-U-Learn. This shows a commitment to the community beyond Sunday worship. This commitment is remarkable.

As the congregation shifted geographically Pastor David T Chan spearheaded a move to a new location on Noriega Street in the Sunset District. The new church building opened in 2002. It represented a fresh start a commitment to serving the community where its members lived.

Further growth followed. A “Together We Build” campaign funded a new larger building completed in 2012. The Chinese Lutheran Church continues to thrive a beacon of faith and community in San Francisco. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and unwavering devotion to its congregation and the wider community. It’s an inspiring story. This church serves as a testament to the power of faith community and the enduring spirit of San Francisco’s Chinese community. It’s a vibrant part of the city’s rich history.
