Remember John D. Rockefeller’s gift as you gaze upon this magnificent structure. Rockefeller Memorial Chapel stands as a testament to his philanthropy and vision. It serves as a cultural hub for the University of Chicago. Completed in 1928 the Chapel has been an important part of the University ever since.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel is an outstanding example of Late Gothic Revival architecture. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed this visual landmark. He was one of the United States’ most prolific ecclesiastical architects. The Chapel is a Chicago Landmark along the Midway Plaisance. This broad greensward connects Jackson and Washington Parks.

Imagine the challenge of updating this historic space. The University commissioned a lighting and electrical upgrade nearly 80 years after its completion. Designers integrated new light sources without detracting from the architecture. The chapel now features distinct layers of light. A new dimmer control system allows customized lighting for various events. The day-to-day lighting preset consumes only 0.8 watts per square foot.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel is a large building. It measures 265 feet long and 102 feet wide at its widest point. The interior ceiling is 79 feet from the floor. The tower reaches 207 feet high. A spiral stone staircase with 271 steps leads to the top. The walls contain 72000 pieces of Indiana limestone. The ceiling is decorated with 100000 pieces of colored Guastavino tile.

The Chapel contains the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon and tower. John D. Rockefeller Jr. donated it in 1932 to honor his mother. This 72-bell carillon ranks as the second-largest in the world by mass.

Sculptors Lee Lawrie and Ulric Ellerhusen created 70 integrated figural sculptures. Hildreth Meière crafted the interior mosaics. Alois Lang carved the woodcarvings on the organ and South balcony. He revived the medieval art of ecclesiastical carving. His pieces are carved from White Appalachian Oak.

Today Rockefeller Memorial Chapel hosts diverse events. These include ecumenical worship services and university convocations. Guest speakers frequent this place. Musical programs, weddings, memorial services, and film screenings also occur here.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel embodies architectural grandeur. It is a place for reflection, celebration, and community. Its enduring presence enriches the University of Chicago. It inspires all who enter its hallowed halls. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history, art, and purpose that defines this iconic landmark.
