Peering up at the “Alter Peter,” as locals call it, we are about to explore St. Peter’s Church, Munich’s oldest Catholic church and a true symbol of the city. St. Peter’s Church has stood here since the 12th century. Though, a church existed on this site even earlier in the 8th century. It has been rebuilt many times due to fires and wars over the centuries.

Let’s step inside St. Peter’s Church. The interior showcases a blend of architectural styles. Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo elements tell the story of its long history. Look for the St. Martin Altar. The ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann is also a highlight.

One unusual feature often catches visitors’ eyes. It is the bejeweled skeleton of Saint Munditia in the second chapel. The skeleton is covered in gold and precious stones.

For a breathtaking view, consider climbing the “Alter Peter”. It has a height of 91 meters. Over 300 steps lead to the top. Your effort will be rewarded with stunning views of Munich’s historic center. On a clear day, you might even spot the Alps.

The church sits on Petersbergl. This small hill has been a site of worship since before Munich was founded in 1158. The first church was built shortly after the city’s founding.

St. Peter’s Church tower houses eight bells. Four of them are historical examples from the Late Middle Ages and the Baroque era. If you climb the tower, you can glimpse them through a window to the belfry. The “Poor Sinners” bell is the smallest and oldest. It dates back to after the city fire of 1327. It used to ring during executions on Marienplatz.

The tower has many clocks. Karl Valentin, a Munich comedian, joked that they are there “so that eight people can check the time at once”.

St. Peter’s Church suffered heavy damage during World War II. However, it has been lovingly restored. The ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann was restored between 1999 and 2000.

So, as we stand here before St. Peter’s Church, remember its long history. It is a testament to Munich’s resilience. It is a place where art, faith, and history intertwine.
