The oldest church bells in Munich chime. Their resonant tones echo through the centuries. This is St Peter’s Church. We stand before Alter Peter a landmark steeped in Munich’s rich history.

St Peter’s is not just a pretty building. It’s the oldest recorded parish church in Munich. It’s the very heart of the city. It’s believed to be the starting point from which Munich grew. Imagine eighth-century monks living near a pre-Merovingian church on this very spot. This hill was then known as Petersbergl.

A new church in the Bavarian Romanesque style was built in the late twelfth century. It was later expanded in Gothic style. Sadly a great fire in 1327 destroyed much of the church. It was then painstakingly reconstructed and rededicated in 1368. The magnificent 91-meter tower was crowned with its Renaissance steeple in the early 17th century. A Baroque choir was added too.

The interior is breathtaking. The high altar is a masterpiece. Erasmus Grasser himself contributed the impressive figure of Saint Peter. You’ll also find five Gothic paintings by Jan Polack. Several altars are the work of Ignaz Günther. The ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann is a sight to behold. It was painstakingly restored between 1999 and 2000. World War II caused heavy damage. But St Peter’s survived. It’s a testament to the resilience of the city. And its people.

Look closely. Notice the weathered grave slabs on the outer walls. These silent stones tell tales of centuries past. They are a poignant reminder of Munich’s long and vibrant history.

The oldest documented city clocks are here in St Peter’s. Eight dials tell the time. Even the bells have a story. Four of the eight bells were cast between 1327 and 1720. The oldest bell is no longer rung. It’s called the “Poor Sinner’s Bell”. It used to toll during executions in Marienplatz. Now it hangs silently behind bars in the tower basement.

St Peter’s Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living museum. A living testament to Munich’s enduring spirit. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting this wonderful city. So take your time. Explore the beauty. Absorb the history. Let the spirit of St Peter’s Church move you.
