Did you know that Kahala Mall wasn’t always called Kahala Mall? Originally opened in November 1954 it was known as the Waialae Shopping Center. Imagine a much different scene than the air-conditioned haven we see today. It was an outdoor mall a humble beginning for this Honolulu landmark.

Kahala Mall’s location is prime real estate nestled on Waialae Avenue near where Interstate H-1 meets Kalanianaole Highway. This strategic position makes it easily accessible a key stop for several TheBus routes. It’s not just a shopping center it’s a community hub.

Its early days were quite different. The Waialae Shopping Center boasted Piggly Wiggly Supermarkets as its anchor tenant. Can you believe it? This was the eleventh Piggly Wiggly on Oahu. The chain claimed to have invented self-service supermarkets. A real testament to its innovative spirit. A Benson Smith drugstore also opened. Teens loved its long soda fountain. This initial lineup laid the groundwork for the mall’s future success.

The mall underwent a massive transformation in 1969-1970. Philip Lyon Gordon and Company spearheaded a renovation project. The mall became fully enclosed and air-conditioned a first for the islands. Enormous glass chandeliers arrived from Venice. A sculpted fountain graced the space. This transformation not only modernized the mall but also elevated its status. It attracted upscale tenants and further cemented its position as a high-class destination.

The Kahala Mall isn’t just about shopping. Local seniors start their day there enjoying free exercise programs. Students gather to socialize or use the numerous gathering areas. Even the legendary actor Jack Lord of Hawaii Five-O fame frequented the mall in his later years. A bronzed bust of Lord stands as a testament to this connection near the California Pizza Kitchen entrance.

A significant event marked Kahala Mall’s history. In 2006 a flood affected approximately 60 of its 90 businesses. The water even knocked down two movie auditorium walls. It’s a reminder that even the most established landmarks aren’t immune to the unexpected.

Today Kahala Mall boasts a collection of nationally and internationally recognized businesses. Macy’s Whole Foods Market Starbucks and an Apple Store are just a few of the many shops. Consolidated Theatres Kahala 8 provides entertainment. The mall’s success speaks to its adaptability and enduring appeal. It has evolved from humble beginnings to become a beloved destination in Honolulu. And its legacy continues to grow.
