Fortuna-Sportpark is home to SV Fortuna Leipzig 02. The club was founded as a football club on June 29, 1902. The Fortuna-Sportpark was opened on November 2, 1913. Back then it could hold around 25000 viewers. Today it can accommodate about 7000.
In the 1920s Fortuna Leipzig was one of the leading football clubs in Saxony. In the 1925/26 season, Fortuna Leipzig reached the final for the Central German Championship. They won against Riesaer SV and Chemnitzer Ballspielclub. But they lost against Dresdner SC with 0:3. In the same year, Fortuna qualified for the final round of the German Championship 1925/26. They won 8:0 against FC Preussen Chemnitz. In the round of 16, the team from Leipzig won against FC Bayern Munich with 2:0. But in the quarter-finals they lost to Hamburger SV with 2:6.
From 1934 until its dissolution in 1945, the club was a permanent fixture in the Gauliga Sachsen. The best placement was second place in the 1937/38 season.
After the end of the war, the club was dissolved. It was re-established as SG Paunsdorf. There were further name changes in 1948 to RAW-Transportpolizei Leipzig. In 1949 it was renamed RAW-Polygraph Leipzig. In 1950 another name change took place to BSG Lokomotive Ost Leipzig. In 1956 Lok Ost Leipzig was promoted from the Leipzig district class to the district league. They were immediately promoted to the II. DDR-Liga. After several years in the district league, the team from Leipzig was promoted to the DDR-Liga in 1971.
After reunification, the Leipzig team took on its historical name Fortuna again. Fortuna has been trying to get promoted to the Landesliga Sachsen ever since.
Today, SV Fortuna Leipzig 02 offers more than just football. You can also find volleyball, chess, bowling, weight training and gymnastics here. The club has several grass pitches, a bowling alley and its own sports hall. The Fortuna-Sportpark is located near the Engelsdorf and Paunsdorf residential areas. It is next to the Paunsdorf Center.
In 2022 SV Fortuna Leipzig 02 celebrated its 120th anniversary. There was an open day in the Fortuna-Sportpark. There were about 1300 visitors.
