In 1906, a seed was planted. This seed, on Winterbourne Road, was the Winterbourne Boys’ Academy. It wasn’t called that at first, of course. It started as Winterbourne Road School, a combined boys’, girls’, and infants’ school. The need for a local school was dire, as the closest option was far away in Ecclesbourne. The Board of Education secured land, and the building began to rise. Imagine the excitement as the school finally opened its doors in August 1906. The demand was so high that it initially functioned as a temporary mixed school, with classes even held in the school hall. Winterbourne Boys’ Academy officially became its own entity in January 1907, along with the girls’ and infants’ schools. Mr. J. Potter was the first headmaster, leading 408 boys within the newly established walls. The school quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It thrived for years, educating generations of young boys. This history is not without its shadows. A war memorial once stood within the school. It honored two former masters and 50 old boys lost in World War I. Although the physical memorial is gone, the names of the fallen remain etched in the school’s story. The inscription serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made. In 2007, Winterbourne Boys’ Academy celebrated a century of educating young minds. The festivities culminated in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The release of hundreds of balloons marked a vibrant celebration of the school’s enduring legacy. Today, Winterbourne Boys’ Academy, part of The Platanos Trust, stands as one of the top-performing schools in the borough. It has earned a “Good” rating from Ofsted, twice. It continues to shape the future, one boy at a time, maintaining its unique status as one of the last single-sex, state-funded junior schools in the UK.
