“The sky is blue and white” someone shouts aloud. This echoes the colors of the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes. It is known by its initials CUQ. Founded on September 3 1938 the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes began as a club for university students.

Initially the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes focused on cultural academic and university activities. Prominent figures from Quilmes were active in the club’s management. They ensured a wide range of activities. These activities became a point of pride for the institution.

Later the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes expanded into sports. They included fencing and basketball. Today the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes excels in rugby and hockey. This is achieved through its connection with Colegio Mancedo de Quilmes.

For many years the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes lacked its own sports field. But in 1970 a merger with Club de Rugby Río de la Plata provided a ground in Ranelagh. Eventually the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes moved its rugby activities. It moved to a location on the Quilmes waterfront. This move boosted the club’s standing in the URBA.

The Círculo Universitario de Quilmes maintains the values of its founders. It respects the institution’s goals. It stays true to the essence of this Quilmes institution. In 2020 a club member reflected on the 50th anniversary of rugby at CUQ. He recalled the first championship win on September 5 1970. He expressed gratitude to teammates. He honored those who had passed away.

The Círculo Universitario de Quilmes continues to cherish its past. It supports its present achievements. Dr. Nicolás Chover currently serves as president. He guides the club forward.

The Círculo Universitario de Quilmes has achieved significant sporting success. The club has won 129 titles. This includes four intercontinental cups. One victory was against the All Blacks. In men’s hockey the club secured a First Division title in 1992. Today the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes competes in the URBA’s top tier. It continues to build on its legacy.
