Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Standing before Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro you can almost feel it. This church breathes centuries of devotion faith and resilience.

In 1901 the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Good and Perpetual Help arrived in Buenos Aires from Rome. Led by Sister María Amada de la Cruz they embarked on a monumental task. They would build this very church. The Sisters along with donations from the faithful commissioned architect Ernesto Vespignani. He oversaw construction until his death in 1925. Ten years earlier in 1909 Monsignor José Orzali blessed the cornerstone of the future school. Another significant blessing took place in May 1912 when the Superior of the Redemptorist Fathers blessed the cornerstone of the new church dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro.

A decade later the remains of Dr Carlos Luna and his wife Armenia were interred in the church crypt. They were significant benefactors to the church’s construction. In March 1925 the church bells were consecrated. They were named Trinidad Francisca and María Julia. Three years later in 1928 the church was solemnly blessed. The main altar was consecrated. A general communion mass was held. The church’s images were also blessed. Monsignor Botaro signed the decree establishing it as a canonical parish on October 12 1928.

The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help itself has a remarkable journey. Tradition holds that a merchant stole the miraculous image from a church on the island of Crete. He took it to Rome in the 15th century. A violent storm threatened his ship. He prayed to the Virgin for salvation. The seas miraculously calmed and he reached his destination. When the merchant fell ill he entrusted the image to a family. The Virgin appeared in a child’s dream. She requested to be venerated in the Chapel of St Matthew in Rome. She wished to be called Mother of Perpetual Help.

The icon was placed in the Chapel of St Matthew on March 27 1499. It remained there until the Napoleonic invasion destroyed the chapel in 1798. Augustinian Fathers rescued the image. They took it to a monastery. In 1855 the Redemptorist Fathers arrived in Rome. They built a church in honor of St Alphonsus Liguori. This was on the site of the destroyed St Matthew’s church. Learning about the icon they desired to venerate it. In 1865 the Redemptorist Superiors requested its custody from Pope Pius IX. The Pope agreed and ordered it to be sent to the church of St Alphonsus. The icon thus returned to the place chosen by the Virgin herself.

Devotion to Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro spread worldwide. Churches and sanctuaries were built. Confraternities were established to pray the Perpetual Novena in her honor. June 27th was established as the feast day of the Virgin of Perpetual Help in 1975. As you stand here you can sense the powerful legacy of faith and devotion carried within these walls for generations. Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro stands as a testament to enduring spiritual belief.
