Semper Barat

Hidden within North Jakarta, Semper Barat holds a fascinating history. Semper Barat is more than just a name on a map. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of Portuguese heritage and Indonesian spirit. Semper Barat is located in the Cilincing subdistrict. It shares its borders with Kali Baru to the north, Lagoa, Tugu Utara, and Tugu Selatan to the west, Semper Timur to the east, and Sukapura to the south. This area covers 1.591 square kilometers. As of 2025, Semper Barat had a population of 81,328, comprised of 40,938 men and 40,390 women, living in 14,135 households. The population density is quite high at 51,127 people per square kilometer. Within Semper Barat lies Kampung Tugu, a unique village home to descendants of Portuguese prisoners brought here in the 17th century. Imagine walking through these streets, hearing echoes of Portuguese words blended with Indonesian dialects. Though the Portuguese language is no longer widely spoken, the legacy remains in family names and local traditions. One such tradition is the annual bathing festival held near the historic Tugu Church, the oldest Christian church in Jakarta, founded around 1678. Picture the scene: bowls of pastel powder being passed around, marking faces as a symbol of forgiveness for the past year. The celebration culminates with traditional Kroncong music, a blend of flute, violin, guitar, cello, bass, and vocals, filling the air with joyous melodies. Semper Barat also features modern additions like RPTRA Semper Barat and RPTRA Kapuas, public parks offering green spaces for the community. The larger RW 01 within Semper Barat is a particularly interesting area. It’s so large that there were once plans to divide it into two separate RWs, but the residents strongly opposed this, preferring to maintain their close-knit community.
