“Imagine a garden so meticulously organized, it unlocked the secrets of nature itself!” our guide exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly off the buildings lining Rue Bernard Jussieu. “That’s what Bernard de Jussieu, this street’s namesake, did at the gardens of the Grand Trianon in Versailles.”

A respected botanist, Bernard de Jussieu could have easily claimed his brother’s prestigious position as professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes. However, his humility wouldn’t allow it. Instead, he devoted himself to the less glamorous, but equally important, role of sub-demonstrator of plants. He meticulously expanded the garden’s herbarium, often paying for new additions from his own pocket.

His true genius, though, unfolded at the Grand Trianon. Jussieu believed that a plant’s anatomy held the key to understanding its relationship to other species. He disregarded the popular classification system of the time and arranged the Trianon gardens based on his own observations. This innovative system, later refined by his nephew, formed the foundation for our modern understanding of plant families. Though he published little under his own name, Bernard de Jussieu’s legacy lives on in the very organization of the natural world. And it’s here, on Rue Bernard Jussieu, that we’re reminded of his quiet dedication and the profound impact it had on our understanding of the plant kingdom.
