Deep in the heart of Hiroshima, nestled within the bustling cityscape, lies the humble yet significant Oshie Jizo Shrine. This unassuming wayside shrine holds a captivating story, whispering tales of guidance, protection, and the enduring spirit of the community. Oshie Jizo Shrine isn’t just a place; it’s a living testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of this area.

Originally, the western road served as a vital artery, connecting Hiroshima, Miyauchi, and Kide to the broader world beyond. Travelers and villagers alike relied on this route, traversing the scenic coastal path of Ako, meandering through the mountainous terrain of Nakayama and Saraji, before finally descending into the western road. Oshie Jizo Shrine, perched at the crossroads of the branching paths of Kokusai Island, played a crucial role in ensuring safe passage. The Jizo, a beloved figure in Japanese Buddhism, acted as a silent guardian, guiding weary travelers, preventing them from losing their way, and watching over their journey. Even today, locals affectionately refer to the Jizo as “Oshie Jizo-san,” a term of endearment reflecting the deep respect and reverence held for this benevolent protector.

The Oshie Jizo Shrine we see today wasn’t always in its current location. Until 1965, the shrine resided further up the mountain near the present Ako regulating reservoir. It was in 1979, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local volunteers, that Oshie Jizo-san found its new home, closer to the community it serves. My own encounter with this fascinating piece of history occurred during a community exchange walk in November 1994. While discussing the Ako area with a local resident, I learned about the Oshie Jizo Shrine. This conversation ignited a spark of curiosity within me. It became clear that the western road held a wealth of untold stories, waiting to be unearthed. And Oshie Jizo Shrine, with its silent wisdom, stands as a symbol of this rich, layered past.
