Have you ever wondered what it takes to save lives at sea? Today you are in the heart of Bremen. Here stands the H.J. Kratschke, a testament to the bravery and resilience of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service. This lifeboat, built in 1969, was named for a crew member of the rescue cruiser Adolph Bermpohl who tragically lost his life during a severe maritime accident in February 1967. The H.J. Kratschke served in List, Nordstrand, and Eiderdamm until its retirement in October 2003.

And she’s a beauty. Stretching 18.9 meters long and 4.3 meters wide, she could handle the rough seas with her 30-ton displacement.

What makes this vessel so unique is its ability to navigate the unpredictable waters and lend a helping hand to those in need. Imagine the raw power of her engine, the steady pulse of her hull against the waves, the unwavering dedication of her crew. These brave men and women braved fierce storms and treacherous currents to rescue those lost at sea. It’s a legacy that resonates through every rivet and hatch of the H.J. Kratschke.

Stepping aboard, you’ll be taken back in time. You will see her equipment, like the powerful searchlight used to illuminate the darkness and find lost vessels. But there’s more. The H.J. Kratschke isn’t alone. She’s accompanied by a smaller rescue craft, appropriately called ‘Ludje’. It was designed for special rescue operations. You can almost hear the echoing of the sirens, feel the urgency in every turn of her wheel.

The H.J. Kratschke isn’t just a boat. She’s a tangible symbol of courage, dedication, and the unwavering spirit of those who risk their lives to save others. They are the ones who answer the call of the sea, the silent guardians of the waves.
