Time slipped away. The Rackwitz area. It was settled by Slavs long ago. Their presence echoes even now in the very name. Rak means shrimp. You see the shrimp in the town’s coat of arms a lasting testament to a distant past.

Rackwitz isn’t just one village. It’s a collection of villages. Think of it as a family a network of settlements. Podelwitz the oldest part dates back to 1250. Zschortau and Rackwitz itself joined the historical record in 1349/50. Brodenaundorf joined later in 1547. Over time smaller villages merged with Rackwitz. Some were even lost. Swallowed by the earth to make way for open-cast mines. Lakes now fill the spaces where Kattersnaundorf Werbelin and Schladitz once stood.

Hard times hit Rackwitz. The 15th century brought plague and famine. The Thirty Years’ War brought pillage. Witchcraft trials stained the year 1692. Two women accused of witchcraft faced the town’s harsh judgment. Even a train crash in 1871 near Rackwitz claimed nineteen lives injuring many more.

But Rackwitz endured. It adapted. It grew. The merger of Rackwitz and Güntheritz created the Rackwitz we know today. Look around you. Notice the architecture. The history lives in the stones. In Podelwitz’s church a gift from Henry the Illustrious to the Teutonic Order on Christmas Eve 1250. In Zschortau’s church stands the last organ built by Johann Scheibel. Johann Sebastian Bach himself tested it.

Rackwitz today is near Leipzig and Delitzsch. The Leipzig Trade Fair Center and Leipzig/Halle Airport are nearby. The Schladitzer See and Werbeliner See. These lakes were born from open-cast mines. They are beautiful now. A testament to transformation. A reminder of the changes that have shaped this remarkable place. Rackwitz boasts a rich history. It has lived through hardship and change. It stands as a monument to resilience. To the merging of villages into a community.
