Behold the Harrer Pál Statue. This bronze figure stands proudly in Óbuda. It commemorates Pál Harrer Óbuda’s first and only mayor. He served from 1872 to 1873. This was a pivotal time in Budapest’s history. Óbuda Buda and Pest were about to merge.

Harrer was born in 1829 into a poor Swabian farming family. His left hand was deformed. This led him to pursue an administrative career. He couldn’t afford higher education. He entered civil service in 1848. He became Óbuda’s notary in 1850.

In 1872 Óbuda became a town with a council. Harrer was elected mayor. He supported the unification process. He became prefect of Óbuda after the merger. He retired in 1886. His son Ferenc Harrer was a key figure in the creation of Greater Budapest. He even served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1919.

The Harrer Pál Statue was unveiled in 2010. Sculptor László Kutas created the life-size bronze. It stands next to the town hall. A local school bears Harrer’s name too. His life and legacy are celebrated. The statue is a reminder of a crucial period in Budapest’s development. He helped shape the city we know today. Harrer’s dedication to Óbuda is undeniable. He left his mark on this historic district. He transformed Óbuda from an agricultural town into a thriving part of Budapest. This statue is a testament to his lasting contributions.
