Thornton Fractional North High School has a long history in Calumet City. It has seen many changes and expansions over the years. The school has grown to serve the educational needs of its community.

Originally, it wasn’t known as Thornton Fractional North High School. It started as Wentworth High School in 1917. This school only served students from Calumet City.

In 1924, the Thornton Fractional Township District formed. This led to the opening of Thornton Fractional Township High School in March 1926. This marked a new chapter for education in the region.

Disaster struck December 20, 1933. A fire destroyed Thornton Fractional Township High School. The community rallied. The main part of the school was rebuilt on the same site. It reopened February 7, 1936.

The communities of Calumet City and Lansing grew. Thornton Fractional Township High School became T.F. North High School in January 1959. This change happened when T.F. South High School opened.

More additions came in 1963-64. These helped accommodate the growing student population. T.F. North continued to evolve.

A large building expansion finished during the 2005-2006 school year. This project added 12 new classrooms. It also created an 18000 square foot gymnasium. A band room and renovated cafeteria were included. These improvements support the education of over 1600 students.

Thornton Fractional North High School serves students from Calumet City and Burnham. Its boundaries are specific. The Indiana State Line is to the east. Torrence Avenue is to the west. The Little Calumet River is to the south. Chicago is to the north.

T. F. North High School has maintained its accreditation. The Illinois State Board of Education fully accredits it. It has been accredited by the North Central Association since 1927.
