A quiet street in Marseille. This is Rue Marc Donadille. Do you feel the weight of history here?

This unassuming street in the 13th arrondissement holds a secret. A secret of courage and faith. It’s connected to the remarkable story of Pastor Marc Donadille. During World War II Pastor Donadille was a rescuer. He risked his life to save Jews from Nazi persecution.

Pastor Donadille was not just a religious leader. He was a hero. He worked with CIMADE a Protestant refugee organization. CIMADE helped Jews escape internment camps. They hid them with families and helped them cross into Switzerland.

Pastor Donadille’s actions were daring and dangerous. He forged identification papers. He hid around 80 Jews in his own home. He also escorted another 100 to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. This mountain village was a haven for those fleeing the Nazis. His brother aided him by using his position on the railroad.

The Vichy police raided his home. They searched for incriminating evidence. They didn’t find anything. Pastor Donadille’s bravery was remarkable. He stood against the Nazi regime. He believed in the sanctity of life. He acted on his faith.

He said “My Protestant ancestors believed persecuting people for their race or religion was inadmissible. They taught me Jews are the people of the Bible”. This belief guided his selfless acts. He put his life on the line. He risked everything for others.

Rue Marc Donadille may seem ordinary. But its name commemorates an extraordinary man. His courage and compassion shine brightly. They remind us of the importance of standing up for justice. They remind us of the power of faith in action.

As you walk down this street imagine the quiet heroism. Imagine the risk and the reward. Imagine the lives saved. Imagine Pastor Donadille. His legacy lives on. It lives on in the name of this street. It lives on in the hearts of those he saved. It lives on in all of us who remember his sacrifice. Remember his story. Remember Rue Marc Donadille.
