Structural problems forced its closure in 1978. A demolition petition was approved in 1982. But in 1983, the building was listed. Total demolition was not granted.

In December 1985, tragedy struck. A fire badly damaged the church. Only the west end and chancel survived.

Maurice Taylor designed a new church. It incorporated the undamaged portion. The new Christ Church West Croydon was completed in April 1991. The Bishop of Southwark opened it in June 1991.

Today, the preserved west end serves as a hall. The new section is the worship area. A two-story link connects them. This link houses offices, a crèche, and a youth room.

Christ Church offers many activities. Sunday service is at 10:30 am. It lasts 90 minutes. Children and youth groups meet in adjacent rooms. Midweek meetings include Bible study and prayer.
