Gazing upon St Peter and the Guardian Angels, one can’t help but feel a sense of history. This unassuming church, nestled in the heart of Rotherhithe, holds within its walls a story as rich and layered as the community it serves. St Peter and the Guardian Angels wasn’t simply erected. It emerged from a genuine need, a desire to bring the Catholic faith to the heart of this bustling community.

In the late 19th century, Rotherhithe lacked a dedicated Catholic presence. Anglican churches dotted the landscape, but the Catholic community relied on a distant parish church in Dockhead. That changed in 1858 with a small chapel in Rotherhithe Street. This marked the beginning, a seed planted by the East End Missions, dedicated to expanding the Catholic faith eastward. This small chapel paved the way for the Church of Immaculate Conception in 1861. But the story of St Peter and the Guardian Angels doesn’t truly begin until 1891, with the arrival of Father Joseph Haynes. He celebrated mass in a temporary chapel at the St Joseph’s school in Paradise Street. The diocese then acquired land beside the school, and Father Haynes embarked on a mission to build St Peter and the Guardian Angels. Funding was a constant concern. Father Haynes, new to the art of fundraising, penned charmingly candid letters to *The Tablet* in 1902, appealing for help to settle the £3,000 debt.

The church stands as a memorial to Sir Peter le Page Renouf, an Egyptologist and convert to Catholicism. His wife, Lady Renouf, contributed to the church’s construction, honoring her husband’s connection to the area through his visits to St Joseph’s school. The church’s architecture reflects the dedication and care poured into its creation. Buttresses, a choir gallery, and a five-columned stone font grace the interior. A small organ, installed in 1922, filled the space with music. Later, between 1925 and 1930, Father David Leahy added an eastern apse with a sanctuary. This sanctuary now holds a baldacchino of Sicilian marble, a testament to the evolving beauty of St Peter and the Guardian Angels. He also added the Lady Altar, adorned with a stone reredos depicting the Madonna, St. Joseph, and King David.

St Peter and the Guardian Angels is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the power of faith, community, and the unwavering dedication of individuals like Father Haynes and Lady Renouf. Their efforts ensured that the Catholic faith found a home in Rotherhithe. This home continues to thrive, offering solace, community, and a connection to something larger than themselves to generations of worshippers. As you stand before St Peter and the Guardian Angels, take a moment to appreciate its story. It is a story woven into the fabric of Rotherhithe itself.
