Newmarket Station Studio first opened in 1873. It quickly became a vital link in Auckland’s growing railway network. Imagine the steam trains chugging along the tracks. They connected communities and fueled economic growth.
The original station building, designed by George Troup, was a landmark. It stood proudly as a symbol of progress. But as Auckland grew, Newmarket Station Studio needed to adapt.
In the late 2000s, a massive redevelopment project began. The goal was to modernize the station and improve connections. This was part of ONTRACK’s Project DART. The project cost NZ$35 million. The challenges were immense. The station had to be closed. Two temporary stations were built. They ensured uninterrupted train service. Construction happened over a live rail corridor.
The rebuilt Newmarket Station Studio opened in January 2010. It features two island platforms and three tracks. A concourse sits above the platforms. It connects the station to the surrounding areas. The design improved access from Broadway and Remuera Road. It also provided a pedestrian bridge from Joseph Banks Terrace.
Newmarket Station Studio is now the second-busiest station in Auckland. It serves the Southern, Onehunga, and Western Lines. It facilitates countless journeys every day. The station’s redevelopment wasn’t without its critics. Some people complained about the high step up into trains. This was necessary to allow freight trains to pass. Authorities noted the height was similar to other stations.
The station’s innovative lighting design won three New Zealand IES Lighting design awards in 2010. The awards recognized the LED lantern box design on Remuera Road. Newmarket Station Studio and its architects also won an award from the New Zealand Institute of Architects in 2011. They won for best building in the “Urban Design” category.
Newmarket Station Studio played a role in Auckland’s electrification project. In 2014, Aucklanders took a free ride on the new AM class electric trains. The ride went from Britomart to Newmarket Station Studio and back.
Today, Newmarket Station Studio continues to evolve. The Onehunga Line was shortened in 2022, terminating at Newmarket. Services to Waitematā were later restored during off-peak and weekends. Newmarket Station Studio stands as a symbol of Auckland’s past, present, and future.
