Envision yourself stepping back in time to 19th-century Salonica, a vibrant hub within the Ottoman Empire. Here, amidst the bustling city, the seeds of Terakki Vakfı Okulları were first sown. Terakki Vakfı Okulları, meaning “Progress Foundation Schools,” began its journey in 1877 as Mekteb-i Terakki. This school emerged from humble beginnings as Şemsi Efendi Mektebi, a private Turkish primary school. It quickly blossomed, expanding to offer secondary education and adopting the name Terakki Mektebi. This name clearly signaled its ambitious goal: progress. Terakki Mektebi became a beacon of modern education. It embraced innovative teaching methods like “usul-i cedid,” meaning “the new method.” This forward-thinking approach set it apart. The school catered to both boys and girls, offering a diverse curriculum that included Western-style subjects. It even provided boarding facilities, further demonstrating its commitment to inclusive education. As the 20th century dawned, Terakki Mektebi, now known as Yadigar-ı Terakki Ticaret Mektebi, faced a turning point. The Balkan Wars forced many Turkish families to leave Salonica. In 1919, a group of Terakki alumni, now in Istanbul, rekindled the school’s spirit. They established Şişli Lisan Mektebi, which later became Şişli Terakki Mektebi. This marked a new chapter for Terakki Vakfı Okulları. The school’s journey continued through various locations in Istanbul, operating in rented mansions before finally acquiring its own property in 1935. Despite challenges, Terakki Vakfı Okulları persevered. It evolved from a private enterprise to a foundation, solidifying its commitment to non-profit education. Today, Terakki Vakfı Okulları stands as a testament to its founders’ vision. From its humble beginnings in Salonica to its modern campuses in Istanbul, the school has consistently championed progress and educational excellence. Its legacy continues to shape generations of students.
