Founded in 1926 during the Great Migration Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church began humbly. Its first meetings were held in a basement at 467 East Bowen Avenue. That building is gone now. But the spirit of Mount Pisgah lives on. By 1962 the congregation had grown significantly. They needed more space. They acquired the former Sinai Temple and a social settlement house. This impressive building became their new home. For thirty-six years Mount Pisgah expanded its religious training and community programs. The new location housed the Baptist Theological and Education Center. The Baptist Training Union also called it home. Many other religious activities thrived there too.
October 29 1962 was a momentous day. A 3000-member congregation marched from Bowen Avenue to Grand Boulevard. Reverend Joseph Wells led the procession. The Sunday School Band of Ebenezer Baptist Church joined him. The morning service was led by Dr Herbert Brewster. Famous gospel singers Roberta Martin and Dolores Barrett Campbell performed. The evening service was led by Reverend Ernest F Ledbetter. He was the grandfather of the current reverend Ernest Ledbetter III. This move marked a pivotal moment in the church’s history. It symbolized growth and the enduring faith of its members. Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It remains a spiritual anchor for many. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. The legacy of Mount Pisgah speaks volumes. It tells a story of resilience growth and unwavering devotion.
