Once, this spot at Am Steinbruch bustled with activity. Imagine the clatter of machinery. Visualize workers extracting raw materials. From 1839 to 1970, this quarry fed the Mainz-Weisenau cement plant. It was the sole supplier. Later, mining shifted to the Laubenheim Nord quarry.

Today, Am Steinbruch tells a different story. It is a story of transformation. The area spans 50 hectares. 30 hectares are open to the public. Production of clinker ceased in 2004. Restoration concluded in 2005. The city of Mainz took over in 2008. Nature conservation and recreation became the focus.

A nature trail now winds through Am Steinbruch. It stretches 1.5 km. Information boards dot the path. They reveal insights into nature. They explain mining history. They detail the geology of the area.

Am Steinbruch boasts diverse habitats. These habitats offer refuge to various species. Cliff faces provide homes for insects. Rare birds like jackdaws nest here. Kestrels and peregrine falcons soar above. Dry slopes host species-rich grasslands. Wild bees thrive here. Grasshoppers and butterflies flutter about. Groves and shrubs offer breeding grounds for many bird species. The city of Mainz maintains these habitats.

Consider the biodiversity here at Am Steinbruch. In 1999, 236 vascular plant species were recorded. By 2003, 60 moss species were counted. 46 bird species were observed in 1999. Two amphibian species were noted. One reptile species was found. The area teems with insects. 14 dragonfly species fly around. 15 grasshopper species hop through the grass. 10 butterfly species grace the skies. Three Zygaenidae moth species add to the diversity. 63 wild bee species buzz about. 47 ground beetle species crawl on the ground.

Think about the varied biotopes at Am Steinbruch. There are succession areas. Open biotopes dot the landscape. Rich meadows flourish. Neglected and dry grasslands persist. Ruderal vegetation thrives in fresh to wet habitats. Other ruderal vegetation adapts to dry habitats. A meadow with fruit trees adds to the charm. Groves and hedges offer shelter. Forests stand tall. Semi-humid habitats exist. A pond glistens in the sun. A reed population sways in the breeze. Rock faces and steep faces provide unique niches.

Weisenau is confined. It cannot expand. The Rhine borders it to the northeast and east. Mainz lies to the north. Hechtsheim is to the west. Mainz-Laubenheim sits to the south. Due to its location on the Rhine, Weisenau was home to winemakers. Ferrymen and fishermen also lived here. The old town center still resembles a small fishing village.

Imagine the sounds of quarrying replaced by birdsong. The transformation of Am Steinbruch from a site of industry to one of natural beauty and recreation exemplifies nature’s resilience.
