Imagine painter Barabás Miklós seeking refuge. It was in 1839. He desired an escape from the city’s clamor. He bought land here in Városmajor. The land climbed towards Kis-Sváb Hill. Vineyards covered it. A press house and cellar already stood here. Barabás envisioned more than just a vineyard retreat. He designed a villa.

This is the Barabás-villa. It stands as almost the only building left. It is from the first settlers of Budapest XII district. The villa served initially as a summer getaway. Barabás sought relaxation here. He wanted to escape the city noise.

Let’s delve into its story. Barabás Miklós bought this land in 1839. He was a prominent 19th-century painter. He decided to build a villa based on his own plans.

Years passed after the artist’s death. The city grew around the Barabás-villa. New owners altered the villa. Extensions obscured its original form. By 1996, it became life-threatening. The six families living there had to evacuate.

The XII district Municipality announced a competition in 2000. It was for the villa’s renovation. The aim was to restore the neoclassical building’s original style. Architect Basa Péter won the competition. Barabás’s own watercolor proved invaluable. It depicted his villa and garden. The renovation focused on preserving original parts. Later additions were torn down. The building’s walls were re-clad. Wood and metalwork were restored. They followed the original designs.

Entering through the wrought-iron gate, a fountain greets visitors. The Barabás-villa stands with its central space. Its imposing colonnade represents Hungarian neoclassical architecture. The restored villa and garden reopened. It was on September 26, 2003.

In 2004, the restoration received the Europa Nostra Award. This is a prestigious European architecture award. Today, the building functions as a cultural and event center. You can find a café here. Conference and event rooms are available. Behind the villa lies a carefully maintained park. It spans about 1000 square meters.

The Barabás-villa bridges the past and present. It is a classical building open to contemporary arts. It offers diverse programs for all ages. These include concerts, book launches, and theatrical performances. There are film screenings and children’s programs too.

Note the building’s transformation. Once nearly unrecognizable, the Barabás-villa returned. It is thanks to careful restoration. A large cellar lies beneath the villa. An underground corridor once connected it. This connected to the wine-dresser’s house. Imagine Barabás hosting guests here. Liszt Ferenc and other luminaries visited this villa.

The Barabás-villa stands as a testament. It shows dedication to preserving cultural heritage. Its walls echo with stories. These stories span from artistic inspiration to community gatherings. It is a place where past elegance meets present-day vibrancy.
