Founded in 1873 Hope Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Right here before us is a place steeped in history. It’s the first Black church in Dallas entirely organized and owned by Black people.
Imagine the seven dedicated pioneers Sisters Mattie Rainey Emma Robinson Love Vickey Drake Lucenda Williams Emma Starks Sally Taylor and Brother Jerry Taylor. They began with humble prayer meetings in Sister Rainey’s log cabin. Their dream a church of their own. They contacted the American Baptist Home Mission Society. The society sent Reverend John Hay to organize their prayer group. On the fourth Sunday of July 1873 New Hope Baptist Church was born.
Reverend Hay’s tireless work laid the foundation. The church provided stability and respect to many Black citizens recently freed from slavery. Reverend R Griggs followed strengthening the church’s leadership. Subsequent pastors like Reverend C N Pryor Reverend W D Isaac and Dr Alexander Stephens Jackson each left their mark. Dr Jackson a distinguished graduate of Atlanta and Colgate Universities oversaw the construction of the first large brick building in Dallas owned and built by Black people. This building became a center for cultural political and educational gatherings.
The church hosted prominent Black speakers including Booker T Washington Mary Church Terrell and W E B Du Bois. Under Dr Jackson’s son Reverend Maynard Jackson the First Progressive Voters League was formed in Dallas in 1936. Maynard Jackson Jr the first Black mayor of Atlanta was partly raised within these very walls. Hope Baptist Church experienced a succession of dedicated pastors each contributing to its growth and influence. Dr H Rhett James oversaw the construction of the current building. He organized the only citizens’ march for integration in Dallas.
Hope Baptist Church’s journey mirrors the struggles and triumphs of the Black community in Dallas. It was a place of refuge a center for community action a beacon of faith. From humble beginnings in a log cabin to its current structure Hope Baptist Church continues to serve and inspire. The legacy of faith community and resilience lives on within these walls.
