Construction of the current India House began in 1937. It was completed in 1941. The architect was S.N.A.S Sockalingam Chettiar.
World War II dramatically impacted India House. During the Japanese occupation it stood empty. After the war the original Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation headquarters in George Town was destroyed. India House stepped in. It became the temporary home of the bank. The HSBC later moved back to its rebuilt premises in 1951. India House found a new tenant. The United States Information Service used it until the 1970s. Imagine the stories those walls could tell.
