Tintern Grammar stands as an independent Anglican day school. It is located in Ringwood East, a suburb of Melbourne. Tintern Grammar has a rich history and a commitment to providing a well-rounded education.
Emma Bartlet Cook founded Tintern in 1877. She wanted an excellent school for her children. Neighbors soon asked Cook to enroll their children too. The school quickly grew. Country families sent their children to attend Tintern Grammar as well.
The Church of England Trust purchased the school in 1918. It became Tintern Church of England Girls’ Grammar School. Continued growth led to a need for larger facilities. The school moved to its current 50-acre campus in Ringwood East in 1953.
In 1999, Tintern Grammar returned to its co-educational roots. Southwood, Tintern’s brother school, was established. Tintern Grammar has a strong sense of community.
Tintern Grammar’s campus is set on 20 hectares. It features bushland and landscaped gardens. The facilities include libraries, science labs, and a swimming pool. Tintern Grammar also has a farm. It is called Tinternwood Farm. Students can participate in the Young Farmers’ Program. They enter agricultural competitions.
Until 2021, Tintern Grammar offered the International Baccalaureate. Now, Tintern Grammar offers the Victorian Certificate of Education. It also offers Vocational Education Training.
Tintern Grammar has a house system. It was adopted in 1924. The houses are named after notable figures in the school’s history. They are Butterss-Cross, Gordon-Grant, Mansfield-Mckie, Somner-Stewart, and Dann-Watt.
Tintern Grammar is a member of the Eastern Independent Schools of Melbourne. Tintern Grammar has won many EISM premierships in different sports. These include swimming, badminton, hockey, and tennis.
Many notable people have attended Tintern Grammar. They include comedian Fifi Box and Olympic snowboarder Scotty James. Singer Helen Reddy also went here. Gold medalist cyclist Kathy Watt attended as well.
Tintern Grammar has been a leader in teaching and learning since 1877. Tintern Grammar offers single-gender classes on a co-educational campus. This is known as Parallel Learning. It aims to provide the best of both worlds. Students begin in a co-educational environment. From Prep to Year 9, they learn in single-gender classes. They return to co-educational classes in Years 10 to 12. This provides a balance between academic and social development.
Tintern Grammar caters to the needs of all students. It supports highly able students through the Horizon Program. The school achieves excellent academic results.
