Standing before the imposing facade of the Église Saint-Philippe du Roule, you might feel a sense of wonder at its Neoclassical grandeur. This church, a testament to the architectural prowess of Jean-François Chalgrin, the man behind the iconic Arc de Triomphe, is a masterpiece of the late 18th century. It was constructed between 1774 and 1784, replacing a smaller chapel dedicated to Saint Jacques and Saint Philippe.

The original chapel, located in the village of Roule, had fallen into disrepair. King Louis XV, eager to provide a suitable church for the growing community, commissioned Chalgrin to design a new place of worship. Chalgrin’s plan, reminiscent of Roman temples, featured a majestic colonnade and a triangular pediment adorned with a sculpture of “Religion” holding a chalice and a cross. However, due to financial constraints, the two bell towers that Chalgrin had envisioned were never built.

The church was enlarged in the 19th century, with the addition of a chapel behind the altar and an ambulatory with classical columns. Inside, colorful stained glass windows depicting events in the lives of Saint Philip and Saint John grace the side aisles, a tribute to the work of the renowned glassmaker Emile Hirsch. The nave and choir, ringed by columns with Ionic capitals, create a formal atmosphere. But the dramatic contrast comes from the paintings and sculptures adorning the space. The most striking piece is the Descent of Christ from the Cross, a powerful painting by Theodore Chassériau that depicts the solemn moment of Christ’s death. The Virgin Mary, central to the scene, is surrounded by mourning saints, their expressions of grief providing a stark contrast to the classical architecture.

The Chapel of the Virgin, known for its lavish decoration, is a breathtaking spectacle. Paintings by Claudius Jacquand narrate scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, while a marble statue of the Virgin Mary and child, known as “Our Lady of All the Graces”, stands as the centerpiece. The chapel also features a stained glass window positioned above the altar.
