Why does the Merkez Baba Cami stand here? It is a question that whispers through the stones. This is no ordinary mosque. It is layered with history and whispers of dervishes.

The Merkez Baba Cami’s story begins long before its official construction. The location was likely a holy spring. It was probably a religious center in the Byzantine era. Imagine this space as a place of spiritual significance for centuries.

Merkez Efendi used this area as a place of reclusion. His followers built a lodge here. Later, Mimar Sinan rebuilt it between 1552 and 1572. This was by order of Şah Sultan. She was the sister of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The Merkez Baba Cami complex was more than just a mosque. It included a reclusion house. There were dervish rooms and domestic spaces too. A kitchen, lunchroom, and Turkish bath completed the picture. The tomb and cemetery added a final touch.

Over time, the Merkez Baba Cami complex underwent many changes. Renovations added a house for Quran recital. A fountain and ablution facility joined the ensemble. In 1849, Yesarizade Mustafa İzzet Efendi wrote an epitaph. It tells of repairs by Mahmud II.

In 1925, legislation closed dervish lodges. The Merkez Baba Cami then served only as a mosque. Zeytinburnu Municipality restored it in 1965 and again from 2010 to 2013. The Harem building now serves as a center. It is for The Union of Turkish World Municipalities.

Another story says construction began in 1580. It opened to worshipers in 1582. Sultan Mahmud II restored the Merkez Baba Cami. It still retains many original features.

The Merkez Baba Cami has a rectangular plan. It is made of stone. Round brick arches frame its doors and windows. The courtyard contains Merkez Efendi’s tomb. His family is buried here as well. There is also a public fountain and a cistern. The cistern supplied water to the mosque. A çilehane sits in the courtyard too.

The wooden mansion to the right was the harem building. It has been restored. It will likely host cultural activities. The Merkez Baba Cami square has other attractions. There is a grilled meat restaurant. A Turkish bath awaits restoration. Some wooden mansions add to the charm.

Just outside the gate stands the Abdülbaki Paşa Library. It was once a primary school. Later, it was a storage facility. It was restored in 2007. Today, it houses a tearoom, a library, and a cultural center. Painted panels adorn its domed ceiling. Nearby is the Merkezefendi Konağı or Mansion. It was restored in 2009.

The tomb of Merkez Efendi is attached to the Merkez Baba Cami. Many pilgrims visit it today. Süleyman the Great often visited his tomb. It is located in the mosque’s courtyard.

Next to the tomb is a çilehane. It aligns with Merkez Efendi’s beliefs. He used it to isolate himself.

The Merkezefendi Cemetery is nearby. Many intellectuals, writers, and artists are buried here. It covers a large area. The cemetery was renovated in 2007.

The Merkez Baba Cami stands as a testament to faith. It reflects history and culture. It is more than a building. It is a living story etched in stone.
